Citation:
"On June 8, 1944at Putot-en-Besin, France, Sgt. Walsh was platoon sergeant of No. 10 Platoon, B Company. Duting the morning while occupying a defensive position in an orchard just north of the village, this company was subjected to severe mortar and machine-gun fire, which was the prelude to an enemy tank and infantry attack. The company was completely surrounded and casualties were heavy. Sgt. Walsh, finding himself the senior survivor, reorganized the company and held his position for two hours. In the end B company was completely overrun and Sgt. Walsh and nine men were taken prisoner by the enemy. The house in which they were held by the enemy was shelled by our troops and in the ensuing confusion, Sgt. Walsh mustered all the prisoners and led them back to the battalion position."
