Biography
Ernst Wilhelm Knebel was seriously wounded in Easternprussia on January 24th, 1945, he died on March 13th and was posthumously promoted to Generalmajor.

Awarded for his actions in January 1945 up until he sustained severe injuries sustained on the 24.01.1945. In the middle of that month, as the Kampfkommandant of the city of Schillen (located on the Insterburg-Tilsit railway line), he was able to hold out in the city with alarm and supply units for quite some time until receiving the order to breakout and reach friendly lines.
Four days later, he would once again distinguish himself in leading his Volkssturm and alarm units in their defense of the line Wehlau-Tapiau. In doing so he contributed significantly to maintaining the integrity of the German frontline between the Masurian Lakes and the Curonian Lagoon.

In the heavy fighting in East Prussia, Volkssturm and alarm units under the leadership of the bearer of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, Colonel Knebel, have prevented the passage of the Pregel for days, and thus have contributed that the connection of the front between the Masurian Lakes and the Curonian Lagoon remained preserved.
