In order to facilitate the attack plans of the 24. Infanterie-Division on the opening days of Barbarossa, the capture of Hill 342 (Kapellenberg) located to the east of Potylicz was crucial. Stabsfeldwebel Simm and his Zug, along with two attached squads, were able to capture the steep hill in a coup-de-main on the 24.06.1941. By this action he seized the cornerstone of the Soviet battle position located south of Rawa-Ruska, and in doing so was able to save much effort and blood for his Division. Simm received the Knight's Cross in recognition of his decisive actions here.
