Recommendation:
"Brigadier Cottrell-Hill commands 71 Inf. Bde, since 28.1.44. He consistently commanded his brigade with drive and determination and their success during the battle of Arakan 44 ops was to a very great extent due to his efficient planning and personnel leadership. During the actual battle, he has always shown complete disregard for his personal safety and his handling of successive situations has invariably been of a very high order. He particularly distinguished himself during the engagements in the Wet Valley on 25 March 1944mand in the Spit and Polish operations on 7 & 8 April 44. During the monsoon season he has continued to command his brigade, the most forward in the Division with skill and patience and has been very largely responsible for for the fulfilment of the Divisional task in the Kalapanzin Valley."
LG 37040/2079
Recommendation:
"Brigadier Cottrell-Hill commands 71 Inf. Bde, which carried out a successful assault landing on Ramree Island 21 Jan 45. Prior to the landing Brigadier Cottrell-Hill had very successfully trained his Brigade Gp. at Cocanada and he took a leading part in the planning of the assault landing . The landing was entirely successful and the pre-determined covering positions were successful occupied. Opposition in the Northern part of Ramree Island was not severe and pending the arrival of of the rest of the Division 71st Bde was ordered to continue the advance across the island and capture Ramree. The advance was successfully carried out and Ramree occupied by 71 Bde on 9 Feb 45 twenty days after the initial landing. During the assault landing and advance to Ramree Brig Cottrell Hill displayed very high powers of leadership and command. He handled his supporting arms including bombardment by H.M. ships with great still throughout the operations."
