On the 28.08.1942, during the attack on Tuapse in the west Caucasus, a force of over 100 Soviet soldiers reached a position in the rear of the I./Jäger-Regiment 228 at the Lyssaja mountain. In response Leutnant Kult launched a counterattack against this Soviet force with only 3 squads and wiped it out in bitter close combat. By this action he resolved a dangerous situation for the entire Bataillon, and he was decorated with the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.

The following newspaper article (dated 19.03.1943) describes why Kult received the Oakleaves…
“Oakleaves for a Fallen Soldier - Bataillon commander Oberleutnant Kult:
Oberleutnant Kult… distinguished himself through his selflessness as well as his flexible, superior combat leadership. On the 22. & 23.02.1943 the Bolsheviks attacked the Kuban bridgehead with strong forces and were in a position to infiltrate into the German positions at a number of locations. They were helped in this by the dense terrain that prevailed in the Caucasus foothills. However, after hard combat, the Soviets where pushed back with bloody losses. Oberleutnant Kult died a hero’s death on the first attack day while leading at the head of his Jäger.”
On this day (the 22.02.1943) Oberleutnant Kult and his Kompanie were positioned south of the Kuban near Auscheds, a part of the so-called C-Position in the Abinskaja area. Here he proved to be the soul of the resistance once again, until he was killed by an anti-tank round.

212th Award.
