- Unit:

- Awarded on:
- January 13th, 1944
Recommendation:
"This officer commanded a Battalion which took part in the initial landing at Porto di B. Venere on 8th September. It was essential for the ultimate success of the operation that some high ground two or three miles inland and also the only road which ran laterally through the position should be secured as early as possible.
Lt-Col RAY personally led his battalion forward after the landing had been effected. Several enemy positions were in succession engaged and under his direction anti-tank guns of the battalion knocked out two enemy armoured cars. Although at times under considerable fire Lt-Col RAY by his energy and drive established his battalion on its sector of the beach head and cleared the vital road.
The Battalion was subjected during the day to enemy artillery and mortar fire: to a tank attack and to attack from the air. By his personal example Lt-Col RAY was an inspiration to those around him and his conduct contributed greatly to the splendid behaviour of the battalion throughout the period immediately following the landing."
