Age: 31. Son of Bertram W. Ellis, and of Winifred D. Ellis (nee Mackinnon) of Cookham Dean, Berkshire. B.A., LL.B. The awards of Capt. Ellis were donated to the village council of St. Anthonis by his cousin on 28 September 2019.
Situation surrounding his death described as follows:
"staff car never quite recovered from its baptism of fire.
The next day was much the same. A Squadron was allowed to 27 Sep
stand down for maintenance and B Squadron, with patrols of Recce
Squadron, again moved out to the south-east to investigate the area
where 3rd Troop had had its battle. Very soon the Squadron came
under heavy fire from the south and the enemy soon made it clear
that he was in greater strength than on the day before. While the
Squadron was engaging these guns, Captain R. H. W. Ellis (Second
in Command) was unfortunately killed by a mortar bomb, which
landed on the turret of his tank. Shortly afterwards a heavily
camouflaged Tiger tank was spotted near the monastery at Lactaria;
while moving to engage the Tiger one of 1st Troop''s tanks became etc……."
