"The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Barksdale Hamlett (ASN: 0-18143), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Executive Officer, Corps Artillery, SECOND Corps, in action at Arzew Beach, from 8 November to 12 November 1942. During this period, Lieutenant Colonel Hamlett efficiently organized and operated the Corps Motor Pool while under enemy sniper fire. During the enemy attack near Faid Pass, from 14 February to 18 February 1943, Lieutenant Colonel Hamlett as Liaison Officer with the *** Armored Division provided the Commanding General, II Corps, with current information concerning the then grave situation. On 20 February 1943 he was dispatched to Thala where he accomplished the important mission of coordinating the British and American Artillery units. During the period of great moment when the German Panzer Division attacked through Kasserine Pass, Lieutenant Colonel Hamlett accomplished dangerous reconnaissance missions for the *** Division Artillery. By his outstanding professional knowledge, ability, courage, and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Colonel Hamlett contributed materially to the success of II Corps in North Africa."
