Awarded for his Kompanie’s achievements during the defensive battles for the Rzhev salient in mid-1942. The following excerpt from his Knight’s Cross recommendation describes the action that led to his being awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Within 48 hours on 01-02.08.1942 Oberleutnant Müller fended off 6 strong enemy attacks (each consisting of about 200 men and 4 tanks), some of these in close combat. In this time he personally destroyed a tank with a concentrated charge. He took out another one with a Pak gun whose crew had fallen in battle, placing a direct hit on the turret despite the gun lacking an aiming device. A third enemy tank was destroyed by Müller and one of his Zugführers with a concentrated charge.”
