Operation Shingle
"For gallantry in action on 21 February 1944, near Anzio, Italy. During the third major attack on the Beachhead, vital wire communications to the infantry combat teams were shelled out in several places, not only causing the loss of wire communication to the supported infantry, who were then being attacked , but also breaking the lateral line to the infantry on their right, which at the time was the unit's only line intact to the rear. After numerous attempts by members of the Battalion wire crew to repair the lines, they were called back after suffering one serious casualty, because of the intense shell fire. Corporal Hagany, wire corporal, and a wire sergeant, realizing the importance of these lines, went out without orders in an attempt to repair the breaks and restore communications. Several times, while repairing one break the line would be blown out behind them. After approximately two (2) hours under intense shelling, the line was placed back in operation, and was without a doubt instrumental in the placing of artillery fire on the enemy which caused him to withdraw from the attack. Even though, while repairing the lines, Corporal Hagany was slighly wounded by shell fragments, he successfully cimpleted his self-appointed task in a manner which reflects the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces. Entered military service from Kukuna, Wisconsin."
