Biography

Williams was a member of the 29th Infantry Division on D-Day, 6 June 1944, and served with it continuously until the capture of St. Lo on 18 July 1944. He went on to serve in the 40th Infantry during the Korean Conflict and reached WOJG rank. Williams was the official representative of the 29th Division at the 35th anniversary of D-Day celebration in Normandy in 1979.

"For gallantry in action against the enemy in Normandy, France. On 19 July 1944 Sgt Williams was assigned the mission of mining a road in enemy territory. While engaged at the task Sgt Williams was wounded. Undaunted, he continued with his assignment which necessitated his making numerous trips to the rear to secure additional mines. By Sgt Williams' heroic decision to complete the mission, regardless of the consequences, and the gallant execution of this mission, he rendered a great service to this organization. The exemplary courage and devotion to duty displayed by Sgt Williams reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service. Entered Military Service from Michigan."
