Landing craft Westkapelle

In the garden of the Dike and War Museum Polderhuis is a landing craft with the registration number LC T737 in camouflage colors. The number LC T737 is a number of a landing craft from 1944. It is originally a polyester ship that was built on Texel in the 1980s, was decommissioned, stripped and donated to the museum.

The idea for a Landing Craft came from Lieutenant-Colonel Bob MacDonald a Royal Marines liaison officer during an annual memorial service on the dike of Westkapelle near the Sherman tank.

The entirety of monuments on the dike, in and around the Polderhuis is a tribute to all victims, liberators and civilians. The Polderhuis is a meeting place of the liberators from 1944 with their families and the residents of Westkapelle.

During the opening hours of the Polderhuis, the lid of the vessel is open and the landing craft can be viewed freely. You will get an impression from the photos on display of the landing of the Royal Marines in Westkapelle on 1 November 1944, after the dyke breach and prior to the liberation of Walcheren.
