War Memorial 'De Schoppesteele' Westkapelle

In 1990 the Foundation Monuments Walcheren 40-45 commissioned the building of five monuments in Walcheren. Memorials are placed at the four locations of the dyke breakthrough, in Westkapelle, Veere, Vlissingen and Ritthem. The fifth memorial stands in Middelburg to commemorate the bombing of the city in 1940. Westkapelle The monument was created by the in 2006 deceased artist Rudi van de Wint. The monument was restored in consultation with the heirs of the artist and is now back at the old place in the dunes to commemorate the bombing on the Zeedijk of Westkapelle on October 3th 1944 and the closure of the flooded dyke hole on October 2nd 1945.
It is a seven meters high metal column, which can be seen as the handle of a spade showing an elongated oval shape in which a bomb could be seen. These two views are possible, it were bombs that pierced the dykes and the spade which closed these holes.

Near the memorial, there is a stone with the following text:
By the allied bombing of the sea in October 1944, Walcheren
became later on liberated.
