The following newspaper excerpt (dated 28.11.1942) describes why Windbiel received the Knight’s Cross…
“Hauptmann Anton Windbiel… led his Jäger Bataillon in a strike against enemy forces that had suddenly launched a flank attack of their own during the fighting southeast of Lake Ilmen at the start of October. This attacking enemy force was forced back, and following a hard round of subsequent combat he [Windbiel] stormed a village that was being bitterly defended by the Bolsheviks.”
