On the 10.08.1944 Hauptmann Kedzia led a counterattack with only a few men from his staff and signals unit against Soviet forces that had broken-in at the positions of his 6. Kompanie. This was successful, and he was able to retake the old German line.

Later, on the 20.08.1944, Kedzia and his Bataillon took the village of Kemmern in a coup-de-main after a relentless pursuit through primeval swamp terrain. In the process they destroyed an Soviet battery in close combat, and later were able to make contact with elements of Panzergruppe Strachwitz. With this the connection between Heeresgruppe Nord and the rest of the German army was restored.

For these achievements Kedzia would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.

As the commander of Panzergrenadier-Regiment 98, Major Kedzia found himself in the city of Fürstenberg (on the Oder river) during the Soviet winter offensive of 1945 and was appointed as its Kampfkommandant. He held the city for weeks against a fair superior foe, and was decorated with the Oakleaves for this achievement.
